Here are 5 DVDs to consider:

“Kanał” (1957)
In the second film of Andrzej Wajda’s loose trilogy about World War II, Polish resistance fighters face their last days against the Nazis in 1944. Based on the true events, this was the first film to show the Warsaw Uprising and it brought its director to international attention.

“`night, Mother” (1986)
Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft star in this heavy drama about a woman who tells her mother she’s going to kill herself, tonight, and the ensuing discussion. Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, the film does stumble a little, but the actors’ performances shine and claim all one’s attention.

“Out at the Wedding” (2007)
Rather than admit she’s engaged to a black man, Alex lets her family think she’s a lesbian, but the plan gets out of control when her family not only remains supportive, but inclusive of her made-up girlfriend. Alex hires an actress to play her girlfriend when her sister comes to visit, and of course, nothing goes according to plan. “Out at the Wedding” is a lively indie comedy from photographer and filmmaker Lee Friendlander.

“The Palm Beach Story” (1942)
This hilarious comedy from director Preston Sturges has Claudette Colbert divorcing her penniless husband in order to raise money for him by then marrying a millionaire. Outrageous? You bet. And watch out for Sturges’ intricate plot and directing because you don’t want to miss a detail!

“Transposition” (2009)
Featuring local actors and a local director, this amazing short film is set in the near-future where a young man purchases a new body and faces consequences he never imagined.
