At the Naro Expanded Video, we always have lots of excellent DVDs to suggest for you to rent. From the recent Hollywood titles to classic films from around the world, our selection can be delightfully overwhelming.
Here are 5 DVDs to consider:
“Five” (1951)
After a nuclear holocaust, a small group of survivors bands together to help each other. Soon their individual prejudices and quirks cause rifts in their tense peace. And what if they are really the last people on Earth? “Five” is a fascinating and tense drama way ahead of its time.
“Friends with Money” (2006)
In her circle of friends, Olivia is the oddball because not only is she not rich, but she works as a maid. That doesn’t mean her friends are stable in any fashion, of course. With an all-star cast, this relatable comedy explores mismatched friendships and the expectations of money.
“Lake of Fire” (2006)
This powerful and graphic documentary explores the abortion debate without leaning too heavily toward one side or the other. It gives space to the heated emotions on both sides and shows us the lack of attempts to find common ground, which in today’s political landscape is all too common.
“Timecrimes” (2007)
Héctor is just a man living a quiet life with his wife, until he inadvertently gets into a time machine that sends him back an hour in time. It seems so inconsequential, yet a chain of events is set in motion which will have a profound impact on his life and those around him. “Timecrimes” is an exciting Spanish sci fi thriller that makes similar American movies pale in comparison.
“Vampyr” (1932)
Carl Theodor Dreyer adapted a Sheridan Le Fanu story to make this horror classic about a young traveler hunting for proof of vampire activity. The stunning, dreamlike atmosphere makes this a favorite of mine, over F. W. Murnau’s “Nosferatu”, made a decade earlier.
