Here are 5 DVDs to consider:
“Amnesia: The James Brighton Enigma” (2005)
On a chilly morning in Montreal, the police find a confused young man wandering around naked. He says his name is James Brighton and he’s gay, but that’s all he remembers. What happened to him? Inspired by a true story, “Amnesia” is a compelling mystery exploring what little we know about this mental disorder and about facing painful truths.
“The Night of Truth” (2004)
Set in a fictional West African nation, “The Night of Truth” follows the attempts at peace negotiations during a civil war. A feast is announced to celebrate the occasion, but can the warring factions escape their shared pasts? It’s a powerful story directed by a talented African woman, Fanta Régina Nacro.
“Our Hospitality” (1923)
In this delightful silent comedy, Buster Keaton plays a young dreamer who discovers that the love of his life is a member of the family with whom his own family has been feuding for years. It’s one of Keaton’s best films, and features much of the physical comedy for which he’s famous
“The Prisoner of Shark Island” (1936)
John Ford directed this taut historical drama about Dr Samuel Mudd who unwittingly treated John Wilkes Booth mere hours after his assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Mudd is arrested as a conspirator and sentenced to life imprisonment, but was he guilty? The film depicts his life during his imprisonment and gives a good introduction to the queries about Mudd’s innocence or guilt.
“Stake Land” (2010)
A vampire epidemic has swept across the nation, leaving few survivors. Young Martin was rescued by the mysterious man called Mister and they’ve been travelling toward Canada, killing vampires along the way. But vampires aren’t the only dangers on the road, as determined bands of survivors fight over resources and power. “Stake Land” is the second film from Jim Mickle, the guy behind the excellent low-budget zombie film “Mulberry Street”.
