When he returns home, he struggles to be a success, but can he overcome the rampant corruption? Director Mani Ratnam uses his spectacular rags-to-riches story to comment on India’s rise in the global market.

“Prayers for Bobby” (2009)

Mary Griffith is a devout Christian who lived by the Bible and taught her children to do the same. So when her son Bobby announces he’s gay, she follows the church’s guidelines and tries to bring him back to the church’s teachings. Bobby eventually leaves home, struggles with his family’s disapproval, and ultimately kills himself. Devastated by her loss, Mary finds no answers in her faith and must discover a new path. Based on the biography by Leroy Aarons, this film is a powerful, emotional journey.

“Strangers in Good Company” (1990)

A group of elderly women is en route when their bus breaks down in the middle of the wilderness. Luckily, there’s an abandoned farmhouse nearby, and they set about getting through the night, waiting for rescue. “Strangers in Good Company” is a lovely story about surprising friendships and the delights iin chance encounters.

“Thirst for Love” (1966)

From the latest Eclipse set from the Criterion Collection comes this evocative drama based on a book by Yukio Mishima and directed by Koreyoshi Kurahara. A young widow falls into a sexual relationship with her father-in-law, but grows increasing obsessed with their young gardener. Caught by their different classes, she works to gain his attention, or at least hurt him, completely unaware she is not the only one with a fatal attraction.
