Here are 5 DVDs to consider:
“The Baader Meinhof Complex” (2008)
This is a mesmerizing film about the true story of a group of young Germans in the 1970s who terrorized their country, to bring attention to what they perceived to be wrong in the political system. As their activities become grander, the individuals waver in commitment, giving the authorities the edge to track them down. “The Baader Meinhof Complex” was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
“The Dog Problem” (2006)
Scott Caan wrote and directed this delightful comedy about a depressed writer who follows his therapist’s advice and gets a dog. Now unable to cope not only with his life, but also with a small dog, he tries to get rid of the dog through various means, but is this really what he wants?
“Forbidden Games” (1952)
René Clément’s classic film follows the friendship between an orphan girl and a peasant lad in the French countryside during World War II. They struggle to make sense of the adult world around them, surrounded by death and destruction. It’s a gorgeous portrait of adults (and war) through the eyes of children.
“Jezebel” (1938)
The gossip is that Bette Davis was told she couldn’t possibly be credible as a Southern belle in “Gone with the Wind”. So she made this film, for which she won an Oscar by playing a headstrong Southern belle who strives to win back the man she loves. Whatever the truth, William Wyler’s “Jezebel” is an amazing film.
“$9.99” (2008)
Based on short stories by Israeli author Etgar Keret, this Australian stop-motion claymation film explores the meaning of life in all its comical quirks in a Sydney apartment complex. When Dave gets a book for $9.99 that purports to tell him the secret to life, he sets out to tell everyone he knows about it.
