The Tidewater UNIX Users Group is one of the longest-lived technical users groups in Hampton Roads (we think only the Mac group is older).
Formed before the days of Linux and FreeBSD, TWUUG's roots are in AT&T Unix, early BSD, SCO and a few others. Early meetings stressed how to solve interesting or difficult data processing problems using Unix tools and the Unix philosophy:
"Write programs that do one thing and do it well. Write programs to work together. Write programs to handle text streams, because that is a universal interface."
These early days were long before graphical desktops and Linux were common, and sadly, they are long gone. Except for a few old hackers, The Unix Philosophy is dead, gone and forgotten.
Today, the group focuses on different Linux distributions, and complex applications. Graphics, sound, and video applications are often explored. There is always a congenial, informal atmosphere of learning and discussion.
If you speak Unix/Linux, or want to learn, this is the place for you to come. Always free. We meet monthly.
